State Police to Demonstrate New Tool in Search and Rescue Arsenal

The Massachusetts State Police will debut a new tool in its search and rescue arsenal tomorrow (Tuesday, June 26) at Cochituate State Park in Natick when it demonstrates a newly acquired capability for locating missing people. The SafetyNet system utilizes handheld receives that detect radio frequency signals emitted from a bracelet worn by people who subscribe to the service through its provider. State Police anticipate utilizing the system to find people living with such conditions of Alzheimer’s disease or autism, who are enrolled in the service, who wander off.

The State Police Search and Rescue Team (SERT) will demonstrate the new system by simulating a call out for a missing person in the state park. SERT troopers will use the system to track and locate the “missing” person.  Media members will also have the opportunity to shadow the troopers playing the role of the “missing” persons to, in essence, report first-hand on being found.

SERT troopers have been trained in use of the system. When an individual enrolled in the program goes missing in a large outdoor area, SERT troopers equipped with SafetyNet Search and Rescue Receivers will deploy. Receivers will also be utilized by helicopter crews in the State Police Air Wing. The receivers detect radio signals emitted from a bracelet worn by the person enrolled in the SafetyNet service.

SafetyNet donated 30 Search and Rescue Receivers, conducted training sessions, certified troopers from the State Police Search and Rescue Team (SERT), State Police Air Wing and 911 dispatchers. The State Police are pleased to add this tool to its search and rescue capabilities and we hope media will join us Tuesday for its demonstration.

Media should report to the Cochituate State Park entrance at 43 Commonwealth Road, Natick, by 2 p.m. Tuesday.
